What are Tree Permits?

Tree permits are official documents that allow individuals or organizations to cut down trees in a specific area. These permits are typically issued by local government agencies and are required for any tree removal, whether it is for personal or commercial purposes. The purpose of these permits is to regulate and monitor tree removal to ensure the preservation of the environment and public safety.

When are Tree Permits Necessary?

A tree permit is a written authorization from the town or city that allows a person to perform activities on and around a protected tree.

Common actions that may require a tree permit include, but are not limited to:

  • Removing (cutting down) tree(s) on your property
  • Pruning more than 25% of a protected tree’s canopy on your property
  • Pruning or Removing City-owned tree(s)
  • Excavating within the Tree Protection Zone (critical root zone) of a protected tree
  • Operating construction equipment & vehicles within the Tree Protection Zone (critical root zone) of a protected tree

Not all trees are protected and not all municipalities protect trees. Depending on where the property is located and what your objectives are for the trees, a tree permit may be required by your town or city. Properties that fall within Conservation Authority Lands, Heritage Lands or Ravine & Natural Feature Protection Lands will have greater tree protection rules and additional requirements.

How to Obtain Tree Permits?

The process of obtaining tree permits varies depending on the location and type of tree. In most cases, you will need to submit an application to the local government agency responsible for issuing tree permits. The application will require information such as the location of the tree, the reason for removal, and the type of tree. Some areas may also require an inspection of the tree before issuing a permit.

Green Bird Horticultural is available to help you through the process of meeting tree permit requirements and obtaining Toronto tree permits, or other municipal tree permits.

Why are Tree Permits Necessary?

Tree permits are necessary for several reasons.

  • First and foremost, they help regulate and monitor tree removal to ensure the preservation of the environment.
  • Trees play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem, and removing them without proper authorization can have severe consequences.
  • Additionally, tree permits also help protect public safety by ensuring that trees are not removed in areas where they may pose a danger to people or property.
  • Tree permits are essential for regulating and monitoring tree removal to protect the environment and public safety.
  • The process of obtaining tree permits may vary, but it is necessary to follow the regulations set by local government agencies.
  • Make sure to obtain the necessary permits to avoid any legal consequences.
  • Trees are a valuable resource, and it is our responsibility to protect them for future generations.

We have nothing but awesome things to say about the work done by Green bird Horticultural. From the get go, Johl was professional and helpful. Gave great suggestions in order to save trees and give us a better understanding of what to do moving forward. The crew showed up to remove two trees and were polite and professional as well. The work done over two days was done efficiently and carefully in order not to do any damage to our home or property which was much appreciated. Will use GBH again in a heartbeat.

The crew was very professional. They did a fantastic job of cutting my tree down, and removing all of the branches. The area was left neat and tidy. The only negative thing I could say, is that it took over 2 months to get them here. Im still very happy with the job and would still highly recommend this company.
